Girls Camp

Just wanted to let you all know that I am off to Girls Camp tomorrow. I'll be without my computer till Saturday (possibly Sunday if I'm too tired when I get home Saturday!) We have 8 girls and 2 leaders going this year. As most of you know, I am definitely more of an "indoor" girl, so this isn't as exciting for me as it is for the girls, but I am promising to be positive and do my very best to make this a great week for them.

Growing up, I only went to girls camp once. It was so hot, there were latrines (EEK!), and I didn't feel like I really "connected" with the other girls in our stake. I realize now that it was probably my own fault that I didn't get out there and try to make new friends. I just preferred staying in my own comfort zone. Actually, I did go a couple of years later. But the only reason that I went was because a couple of weeks before camp, my friends Elaine, Sarah, and Jill were sleeping over at Elaine's house to discuss camp things. And, of course, I didn't want to be left out. So I got home from Young Women's that night, and told my parents I wanted to go. Then I called Elaine to tell her that I was going, and she invited me over. Pretty pathetic, eh? We did have a fun time that night--I have the pictures we took to prove it. I lasted only one day at camp, because back then they grouped you on how many years you had actually been at camp, so even though I was 15 or 16, I was grouped with all of the "second-year" girls. I faked sick (which, looking back on, I'm sure EVERYONE knew I was faking) and my mom drove up to get me.

So, this is my second year at camp as a leader, and I am determined to make it a good one for all of my girls. Last year we were in tents and had porta-potties, so if I survived that I can definitely make it this year in a dorm-style building with FLUSHING toilets! :) Wish me luck!

Yaaaayyyyy Jenn!! I wish I could go with you - we would have such fun and make up for the years you didn't go as a youth. I think that whole rule about sticking you with others that have been there as long as you and not based on your age STINKS! I even fought it as Stake Camp Director when I had the calling in Florida - they wouldn't budge. We lost a lot of girls (meaning they chose not to come to camp) because of that rule, and I just don't think it is worth it. Girls camp can be such a strengthening experience. OH WELL. I am so happy you are going, and I hope you have good fun with your girls. I am sure you will, and can't wait to hear how it all goes when you get back. Love you!! Elaine PS..I remember that sleepover too!!! What fun we had.

Again - you are a brave, brave woman! You know I am your fellow-indoor girl myself! I will be thinking of you!!
